What Is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth therapy (also known as online therapy or virtual counseling) is just like traditional in-person therapy, but sessions are held securely over video conferencing platforms. Whether you're at home, at work, or on the go, telehealth allows you to meet with your therapist face-to-face, just virtually. It’s an ideal option for those who find it hard to attend in-person sessions due to distance, time constraints, or physical limitations.

We use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to protect your privacy and ensure a smooth experience. If you are a current patient with us, your sessions can be accessed through your patient portal.

What to Expect in a Telehealth Session

Your telehealth session will feel very similar to a traditional therapy session. Here’s how it typically works:

Before your session: Log in to your patient portal and any telehealth sessions that are ready for you to join will appear at the top of your home page. If you do not see your appointment, please feel free to reach out to us at (586) 216-9253.

During your session: You’ll meet with your therapist in real time, just like you would in person. You can talk through concerns, explore patterns, and work on goals collaboratively.

After your session: You're done! You may receive follow-up notes, worksheets, or resources if needed.

All you need is:

  • A private space where you feel comfortable talking

  • A stable internet connection

  • A computer with a camera and microphone. A smartphone or tablet works as well.

The Benefits of Telehealth

Telehealth therapy offers several distinct advantages that make it an increasingly popular choice for mental health care. Here are some benefits of telehealth therapy:

Accessibility

Telehealth makes therapy more accessible for people with busy schedules, transportation barriers, health concerns, or lack of childcare. This form of therapy is particularly beneficial for those in remote or underserved areas where traditional mental health services might not be as accessible. It bridges the gap, ensuring more people have access to quality mental health care.

Comfort & Convenience
Meet from the comfort of your own home, where you feel safest and most at ease. This eliminates the need for commuting, saving time and reducing the stress associated with arranging in-person visits. Many clients find it more comfortable to engage in therapy in their own environment. This sense of familiarity can enhance the therapeutic experience.

Flexible Scheduling
Whether you're on the go, moving, or simply have a busy schedule, telehealth allows you to stay connected with your therapist even on the weekends. Telehealth often offers more flexible scheduling options compared to traditional therapy. This flexibility is ideal for clients with demanding schedules or those who find it difficult to commit to regular in-person appointments.

Same Quality of Care
Telehealth sessions are just as effective as in-person sessions, offering the same evidence-based techniques, compassionate support, and professional expertise you would receive in our office.

Research consistently shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for a wide range of mental health needs and that virtual therapy has higher completion rates and rates of attendance. Your dedication to your mental health determines the effectiveness of therapy rather than the mode of delivery. Any therapy can lead to long-term improvements.
